Building a Business Case
- Doing what you can to keep your
employees healthy is more than the right thing to do. It's a
smart business decision and will save you money. By implementing
and supporting the workplace program, employers can help reduce
the incidence of flu-related absenteeism and prevent lost
productivity and associated costs. In general, flu-related
absenteeism can range from two to seven days per ill employee.
Cough and fatigue can last for several weeks, slowing a full
return to work.
Holding an on-site clinic means that employees do not need to
take time off to visit their doctor, nurse practitioner or an
outside clinic for immunization. People are more likely to
obtain a flu shot if it is available at a flu shot clinic in
their workplace.
Research conducted by Nichol et al. (1995) estimated that flu
immunization in healthy working adults resulted in decreased
frequency of upper respiratory illness by 25 per cent, 43 per
cent fewer days of sick leave due to upper respiratory illness,
decreased absenteeism due to all illnesses by 36 per cent, and
44 per cent fewer visits to doctors' offices for respiratory
illness.
Employees may not take the time to visit their family physician
or nurse practitioner to get the flu shot. Therefore, a
convenient and accessible workplace program will enable more
employees to be immunized.
The flu vaccine is provided to employers by the government free
of charge and Urgent Niagara will not charge you to come on
site. All your employees need to do to get their flu shot is
present a valid Ontario Health Card.
